Muccio Special Representative Enclosure: 1. 4 copies of OCI Report July 1-31, 1948 HEADQUARTERS UNITED STATES ARMY FORCES IN KOREA APO 235 15 August 1948 SUBJECT: Report of Activities of the Office of Civil Information, USAFIK, 1 July 1948 to 31 July 1948 TO : Commanding General, USAFIK VI - PROVINCIAL BRANCH ACTIVITY Rainy weather has had its effect on activities in the provinces during the past three or four weeks. Services, especially transportation and communication, have been disrupted by heavy rainfall. However, in the face of these handicaps, the work in the provinces has been carried on without unduly discouraging results. Indeed, the program has moved ahead in creditable fashion. 1. Information Centers a. Cheju Center. While the building for the Cheju center was being prepared for occupancy, a large display panel was erected in the main square of Cheju City, and a loudspeaker set up. OCI news pictures and bulletins were posted here, and radio broadcasts of Kim Cha Rip's program, President Truman's speech, etc., were made. The project was a success, as a large and interested crowd gathered daily. Motion-picture films have been shown to crowds of as high as 2,500 persons. Most of these have been shown in open-air places, but some have been presented in the local down-at-heels theater building. The branch manager spent a considerable portion of the month making tours of the island, where the motion pictures were received with wide acclaim. Likewise, the other output of OCI, World News, Farmer's Weekly, and leaflets. The entire month of July was peaceful on the island, and it is hoped this condition will continue. This has enabled the branch manager to get a start which otherwise might not have been possible. It is expected that the center will be open in the near future.
