Incl #1 to G-2 Summary #3. HISTORY OF MAJOR JAPANESE UNITS IN KOREA SOUTH OF 38 DEGREES 17 Area Army In February 1945 the KOREA Army was reorganized as the 17th Area Army and CHOSEN Army District. The former was concerned with military operations and the latter with defense (including guarding, air defense, mobilization, etc). Gen ITAGAKI, who commanded both Area Army and Army District, was replaced in April by Lt Gen KOZUKI Yoshio. 58 Army The 58th Army was organized on CHEJU DO (SAISHU-TO) in April 1945 as over-all headquarters for troops on that island. Lt Gen TOYAMA Noboru is the commanding general. 96 Div The 96th Division was activated near SEOUL (1000-1640) in March 1945 and has been guarding the northern part of CHEJU DO (SAISHU-T6) since April. Its troop strength is small (8,603). The commander, Lt Gen IINUMA, was transferred to JAPAN, leaving a vacancy which was filled by Lt Gen TAKADA Yoshiro. 111 Div The 111th Division was activated in MANCHURIA in July 1944, came under command of the 17th Area Army in May 1945, and has since been guarding the western coast of CHEJU DO (SAISHU-TO). The commander is Lt Gen IWASAKI·Tomio. 121 Div The 121st Division was activated in MANCHURIA simultaneously with the 120th, came under command of the 17th Area Army in May, and has since been stationed in the western part of CHEJU DO (SAISHU-TO). The commander is Lt Gen MASAI Yoshito. 108 IMB The 108th Ind Mxd Bde was activated under the Western District Army (in KYUSHU) in May 1945 and transferred to the eastern part of CHEJU DO (SAISHU-TO) for guard duty. It consists of five battalions and is commanded by Maj Gen HIRAOKA Tsutomu.
