CHEJU-DO TASK FORCE JOURNAL 29 August 1948 SUBJECT: Journal For Weeks 8-14 August TO : Commanding Officer Twentieth Infantry APO 6 Unit 2 8 August (Sunday) Very quiet day. Men went swimming and show. No unusual occurences. 9 Mugust (Monday) 10 August (Tuesday) Usual guard, training and organizational duties. Heavy rain all last night and today. Even FT calcelled as everything was moved indoors. a couple of items not previously reported in the dairy are that I had one prostitute and two procurers put in jail for a week for soliciting around the camp and our roundup of clues on Private Weisel we found three soldiers who had been out of camp without permission. I believe the hard labor these men are doing will cure them of the excess energy. 11 august (Wednesday) Usual guard, training and organizational duties. Bright clear day with warm sun. Last night I was loitering around the main gate watching for procurers and prostitutes. Three man came to the gate. Two escaped when they recognized me and the other a boy of about 8 was released. About ten minutes after midnight I had just returned to my room and I heard four shots on post number one. I ran down and found that some Korean had been throwing rocks at the guard. He had fired at them but missed. No one was injured,. We believe it to be disgruntled Koreans who were put in jail for soliciting business for a house of prostitution near the camp here. I think I've figured out the solution to this Korean women problem here at Cheju. Because it is so easy to get out of this camp and there are so many places for prostisutes to hang out you must check barracks every single night. Secondly we must have a program of physical training and organized athletics that will keep the men from storing up to much energy. Training all day would be the best using the time from 1500 to 1700 for athletics for everyone and follow it with retreat at 1730. That is the plan we are attempting to follow now but the shortage of men makes it difficult. Today we are sending two men back to Sykes which leaves us with 29 men. We must increase the guard slightly for the alert period which puts ·uite a bite on the men stationed here. 12 august (thursday) Usual guard, training,and organizational duties. Spent most of last night prowling around looking for procurers. Found tow who they tell me have done a big business around this camp. I wrote up charges on them and turned them over to the police. Will continue my xxxxx war on procurers and prostitutes tonitht. I reluctantly mention that Corporal Froemming c me down with VD. He was a nifhty good young soldier too so it displeased me very much. Look like I'm failing in the m in job I was going to try to do when I came down here......lickVE. We have plenty of VE lectures, Bontraceptives and pro-kits are available in the day room, we have regular bed checks and I've been doing everything I can to tire the men out in the day time. This particular individual went out about 1930 in the vening and came back at 1030. I found the women he had intercourse with and she is in fail now. 13 august (Friday) Usual guard, training and organizational duties. Caught it T-5 Chalmers and Pvt McDonald off the post without authority. Men been drinking Korean beverages. Disciplinary action being taken. T-5 Chalmers should have been reduced long ago. He is an alcoholic and extremely irresponsible. Sent into to see .ajor Koel, CO 59th KG, in preparation for alert. We expect no trouble from raiders but there is always the danger one of our men may become involved if he pappened to be at the ritht time. We have increased the guard around the post and have a telephone check every half hour. Practice alert scheduled for tommorow morning. 14 august (Saturday) Inspections and usual guard duties. Inspection of men and barracks at 0900 was very good. Have been stressing the fact that all men should try for promotions and most of the men are doing their best. Promoted Private Sanchez. Inspected Mess at 1000 and Motor Pool at 1030. Practice alert at 1100. We have a pretty fair cordon defense set up for the c mp. Had short TIP and VD lecture and then issued Red Cross items to all men. Allowed men to go to the show but we made they t ok it very slow coming back. All men were back in camp at 2140. About 2150 we saw a series &x of signal fires up in the mountains. Everyone got ready to move out by drawing ammo nd weapons. We cancelled the Bingo game but went ahead with the lunch and went to bed when nothing happened. I stayed awake a good part of the ni ht and didn't even hear a gun go off. It was a clear moonlit night. Monday 23 August Usual guard duties. Political situation has not exploded as some thought it might. "Trouble around the 30th" is the watchword now. Tuesday 24 August Wednesday 24 August Reluctantly I turned over Camp Cheju to 1st Lt. Joseph Waterbury Co "E" 1st Infantry Regiment. EDWARD J. CONKLIN 1st Lt. Infantry Commanding
