1. Current Developments
b. UNGOK Visit: A proposed three-day aerial trip to Cheju Island by members of a UNCOK subcommittee was postponed 18 Apr owing to bad weather. The commission members plan to make the trip in the near future and will visit South Cholla Province on their return journey to Seoul. (B-1) (a)
Comment: The two areas on the committees' itinerary are the principle
scenes of rebel activity in South Korea.
a. CHOUGH Offered Assembly Seat: CHOUGH Byung Ok, Korean liaison agent to the United Nations (Intell. Summary 2394), was notified recently that he may have the nomination of the Democratic Nationalist Party for a seat in the National Assembly. The seat was left vacant recently by the death of the incumbent representative. KIM Sung Soo, former member of the Hankook Democratic Party and now a leader of the Democratic Nationalist Party, offered CHOUGH the nomination. In the event CHOUGH declines, LEE Sang Don, deputy propaganda chief of the party, will represent the organization. CHOUGH has intimated that he would run for the office on a noncompetitive basis. Comment: The new Assemblyman will represent South Chungchong Province. Candidates will be voted for at spring elections 10 May.
