Designation suggests Navy may have been expanded. North Korean amphibious training program in process. Two U.S. advisers who were on the SS "Kimball Smith" in custody of North Korean Government, according to Radio Pyongyang. **(6)** SOUTH KOREA Guerrillas suffer heavily during period 16-30 Sep, 635 reported killed. Government forces engaged guerrillas 60 times. Civil Disturbances 16-30 Sep 49: a. Guerrillas Suffer Heavily: Of the more than 70 incidents reported during the period 16-30 Sep, reports indicate that guerrilla forces instigated approximately 10, while the Korean Republic's armed forces, including the National Police, engaged the guerrillas approximately 60 times. The sudden decrease in the number of guerrilla-instigated incidents and the accelerated activity by Government forces, appears to be a direct result of the "September Offensive" (Intell. Summary 2555). Approximately 635 guerrillas, 100 soldiers and National Policemen, and 25 civilians were killed during the period, according to reports--most of which were submitted by Korean Army officials. However, it is believed that the guerrillas reported killed is highly exaggerated. A vast majority of the government casualties occurred during guerrilla ambushes. South Cholla Province continues to be the hot spot on the mainland, although more and more incidents are occurring along the eastern coast. No serious incidents were reported for Cheju Island.
