Civil Disturbances 1-15 Dec 49: a. Guerrilla Losses High: Ten National Policemen, 11 soldiers, 40 civilians, and 423 guerrillas were killed in civil disturbances during the period 1-15 Dec 49, according to a recapitulation of reports submitted for the period concerned. Although a few scattered incidents occurred along the eastern coast, a majority took place in South Cholla Province--long the scene of concerted guerrilla activity. The number of guerrilla losses dropped slightly under that for the corresponding period for Nov 49, when 435 guerrillas were killed (Intell. Summary 2657). Of the 58 incidents involving deaths reported during the period, 11 were instigated by the guerrillas, while 47 operations were conducted by the Government's armed forces. Only one serious incident occurred on Cheju Island--the former guerrilla stronghold in South Korea. A summary of important incidents reported during the period is given below. (a) b.
