(1) Strike Abating on CHEJU DO
A report received on 190000 March, states that 90% of the striking Military Government employees and 50% of the transportation employees have returned to work on the island province; the situation is reported as quiet.
COMMENT: The Korean Provincial Governor of CHEJU recently declared himself unsympathetic with the strike and is reported to have exerted his influence upon Korean department heads to persuade their employees to return to their jobs in that the strike is considered by him to be unjustified. Police reinforcements on the island are believed to be an assurance against further disturbances arising from ill-feeling engendered during 01 March riots. The demonstrations, strikes, and riots are strongly believed to be Communist inspired and the result of unauthorized demonstrations; the population of CHEJU DO is estimated to be 70% Left Wing in political sympathy.
