Civil Disturbances by Province. In Cholla-South: Investigation of the killing of a Korean on CHEJU-DO, 12 Dec 45, (para 3b (1) (b), G-2 Report #56, 15 Dec 45), disclosed the following: A detachment from the 59th Military Government Company accompanied civil police to CHUNGJUN-RI (not on map), to quell the reported riot. On arrival it was found that a group of townspeople had beaten the Mayor and were in possession of the City Hall. On sight of U. S. troops the rioters attempted to flee. When they refused to halt as ordered (Korean language was used), the detatchment Commander ordered his men to fire over their heads. One shot was low, hitting and killing KIM, Heng. Cause of the disorder was determined to be personal dislikes of the Mayor. Miscellaneous. In MOSULP'O (924 - 1118) on CHEJU Island a U. S. medical officer reported 15 cases of smallpox. Seven of the victims died.
