1947년 3월 1일 오전 10시 제주읍에서 약 1,000여명의 군중들이 허가 받지 않은 집회를 열고 시가행진을 벌였다. 군중들은 오후 2시 45분 경찰서로 행진해 공격했다. 경찰은 군중들을 향해 발포했다. 민간인 4명이 죽고 숫자 미상의 민간인들이 다쳤다. 부상당한 폭도 가운데 1명이 나중에 사망했다. 경찰 1명이 가벼운 부상을 입었고 미국인 사상자는 없었다. 미군은 군중 해산을 지원했다. 제주경찰서장은 경무부에 100명의 목포 특별경찰 파견을 요청했다. 그들은 3월 1일 오후 5시 선박편으로 파견됐다. 상황은 평온하지만 긴장돼 있다.

Cholla-South:
(1) In CHEJU City (951 - 1151) at 1000, 1 March 47, there was an unauthorized parade and meeting of about 1,000 people. The mob marched on the police buildings and attacked the police at 1445. The police fired into the mob. Four civilians were killed and an unknown number was injured; one of the wounded rioters died later. One policeman was slightly injured; no American casualties. U.S. troops assisted in dispersing the crowd. The Chief of Police of CHEJU City made a request to National Police Hq for 100 additional police from MOKPO (938 - 1037); they were dispatched by boat at 1700, 1 March 47. The situation is quiet but tense.
