It is believed that this issue of the Monthly Economic Statistics contains nothing worthy of special note which has not previously been transmitted to the Department in another form. Agriculture Purchasing of Rice: Rice purchased by the government up to the end of February, 1949 totaled 3,618,363 *suk* (1 *suk* = 4.96 bushels), or 48.2% of the goal. Purchases in the City of Seoul, North Chungchung Province, South Chungchung Province, North Cholla Province, North Kyungsang Province and South Kyungsang Province exceeded 50% of their respective goals. Kyunggi, South Cholla and Kangwon Provinces registered less than 50% purchased. There was no purchase at all in Cheju Island Province due to disturbances. In view of this poor record, the government repeatedly appealed to farmers to cooperate in the purchasing program. It seems likely that rigorous emergency measures will be taken as a final resort in the hope of fulfilling the program.
